Sleep is an essential biological process, important for physical and mental well being. Sleep health is considered to be of foremost importance by both medical science and general public. There are great number of campaigns and awareness on how to maintain your sleep cycle and stay healthy. All this okay, but you must be wondering how sleep disorders can cause erectile dysfunction?

Like we already know, many factors are responsible for erectile dysfunction ranging from physical reasons to physiological reasons. And among those physical reasons, sleep is one of them. Recent research have shown that lack of sufficient sleep, abrupt sleeping cycles or sleeping disorders affect many aspects of human health including sexual function. In fact, a good percentage of patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) have been diagnosed with a sleeping disorder that contributes to their sexual dysfunction. Lethargy, insomnia, shift-work disorder and restless legs syndrome are all sleep disorders and are associated with ED and other sexual dysfunctionalities.

Recent research has also proven that sleeping deficiency and sleep disorders are a major reason for diminished sex hormone level, i.e. Testosterone, which in turn leads to erectile dysfunction and also ejaculatory disorders. Till date ED among the middle-aged and older population due to sleep deficiency is more than half (52%) of men aged 40 to 70 years.

Although there are a lot under the list of sleeping disorders, the most prevalent sleeping disorder responsible for erectile dysfunction is Insomnia, which is lack of sleep or no sleep at all. Just to add to the already existing problem, insomnia also plays with your physical health, being a major cause of cardiovascular heart diseases, diabetes and it is even identified as a major cause on anxiety and depression. Let us now restrict our discussion around testosterone.

The only connection between sleep disorder, i.e. insomnia and erectile or sexual dysfunctionality is decrease in testosterone level, or rather a decrease in production of sex hormones in the human body. Testosterone production level is shown to rise when we sleep and there is a rhythmic breathing pattern. So the production and circulation of testosterone is the highest when we sleep. Thus the counterpart, insomnia i.e. insufficient sleep could adversely affect the level of testosterone secreted and circulated via shortening sleep duration or altering the cycle of sleep. It has also been found that sleep loss during the second half of the night significantly reduces the morning testosterone level.

We all have heard about ‘morning erection’. It is known to be the peak of erection because the penile system erects on testosterone level. Now lack of sleep will significantly reduce the testosterone and will also affect the morning erection, thus affecting overall erection maintaining ability and permanently leaving the person with ED. Testosterone plays an important role in sexual function, muscle mass, bone mineral density, and even mood. Chronic insomnia or chronic sleep restriction could therefore not only cause decreases in testosterone levels, but could also have marked implications for health and quality of life, including sexual function

Testosterone plays a very important role in sex-life, psychological health, i.e. mood, body and muscle mass density as well. Insomnia or sleep restriction could therefore not only cause decreases in testosterone levels, but could cause adverse impacts for health and quality of normal as well as your sex-life.

Sleep is very important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A human should sleep approximately one third of his entire day. Anything more or less could be very harmful. Our body needs to rest after constant work throughout. After all, a happy life always leads to a healthy life.
