ED is a common condition that is usually reversible. While not all cases of ED are reversible, even for ‘non-reversible’ cases, people can easily manage their symptoms with the right medical treatment. Keep reading to learn about the main treatment options for ED!

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a male sexual dysfunction. People with ED find it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection. This affects their sex drive and sexual performance, resulting in a decline in their overall sexual health. They might also have difficulty helping their partner conceive (due to the inability to penetrate into the vagina), which can cause relationship issues and poor mental health.

Treatment For Erectile Dysfunction

1. Therapy

Psychotherapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven to be an effective treatment for ED. ED is often linked to psychological factors like stress, performance anxiety, reduced sexual desire, etc. In such cases especially, CBT can help manage – and even change – the way you think and act, directly impacting your self-image and sexual performance.

Sex Therapy

Research shows sex therapy for erectile dysfunction reduces the severity of ED symptoms. The results of a 1992 study conducted on couples indicate a 69.4% success rate when both partners were willing to participate in sex therapy. This form of therapy can target anxiety, relationship concerns, and several other factors that lead to weaker erections and overall poorer sex life.

2. Treatment

Visit your doctor if you have persistent symptoms of ED. Let your healthcare provider know about any pressing health conditions and if you are on any prescription medications, as those could be underlying conditions that are causing or worsening your symptoms.

Your doctor might prescribe blood tests, urine tests, or ultrasounds for your penile blood vessels before identifying the right course of action for you.

Listed below are the common medical treatments for ED:

  1. Penile Implants: Inflatable devices can be surgically placed inside your penis. Implant surgery lets you be in control of the strength and duration of your erections as it helps you ‘manually’ cause an erection.

  2. Penile Pumps: These are vacuum devices with a hand or battery-controlled pump. The pump needs to be placed over your penis approximately 30 minutes before having sexual intercourse. This creates a vacuum around the penis, encouraging blood flow and causing an erection. The pump can be adjusted around the base of your penis post, giving you an erection that is strong enough for solo or partnered sex.

3. Medication

Erectile dysfunction medication includes the following:

  1. Oral medications like PDE-5 inhibitors – vardenafil, tadalafil, avanafil, and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction –
  2. Injection of medications into the penis to increase blood flow; is usually administered through prostaglandin E1 or Alprostadil self-injections
  3. Alprostadil urethral suppository, where a small Alprostadil suppository is placed inside your penile urethra
  4. Testosterone replacement via creams, capsules, or implants

However, keep in mind that prescription drugs like blood pressure medications, medicines for heart diseases, or nitrates might lower the effectiveness of ED medications.

On the other hand, if your ED is caused due to another health concern, associated medications can help manage its symptoms. For example, high cholesterol has been linked to ED and cholesterol-lowering drugs can have a direct effect on your sexual performance.

4. Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Besides medical interventions, there are certain natural treatments for ED. These include dietary changes, supplements, and regular physical activities. Check the details below!

Diet

Eating a healthy diet improves sexual function and helps you manage the symptoms of ED. A 2017 study found that consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and flavonoids reduces the risk of ED among men aged 18 – 40. This is backed up by a 2020 study. Its findings state that men who follow a Mediterranean diet demonstrate a lower risk of ED. Mediterranean diet typically includes fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fish.

Sleep

Not getting adequate sleep reduces your testosterone levels, and low testosterone contributes to ED. The findings from a 2017 study indicate men who report poorer sleep quality were more susceptible to ED. Further, research from 2019 shows that men with a sleep disorder are at a higher risk of developing sexual dysfunctions. Try to get 6-8 hours of sleep every night to ensure you are well-rested and at a lower risk of ED.

Exercise

Regular physical activity helps control and prevent ED. Research shows that 30-40 minutes of aerobic exercise four times per week for six months helps reduce ED. Based on your preferences and comfort levels, you can start with running, cycling, swimming, or even walking. Over time, you can increase the intensity and duration of your activities.

Reduce Your Alcohol and Tobacco Intake

Both smoking and drinking have been proven to increase the risk of developing ED. Reducing and keeping your alcohol and tobacco intake in check is therefore one of the most important ways of managing the symptoms of ED.

Natural Supplements

Finally, you can also consider taking certain natural supplements for better erectile function. Some options for natural remedies are Panax ginseng, horny goat weed, maca, yohimbine, etc. Other dietary supplements that can help you respond better to sexual stimulation include L-arginine, propionyl-L-carnitine, and L-citrulline.

However, the research on herbal remedies for ED is limited. Don’t forget to check with your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you are on any prescription drugs.

Is ED Curable?

While ED can be reversible, it does not apply to all cases. However, for non-reversible cases, the symptoms can be effectively managed with the right treatment. Penile implant surgery, sex therapy, and CBT are all effective medical treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Oral medications like sildenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil – a class of PDE-5 inhibitors can help you get stronger erections. Other medications for ED include penile injections, testosterone implants, and nutritional supplements like L-arginine.

Your healthcare provider can also offer you advice on lifestyle changes that would help you manage ED symptoms. This includes following a balanced diet, getting enough sleep every night, and exercising 3-4 times each week.
