Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual health issue where a man ejaculates sooner than he or his partner would like during sex. Since your semen analysis and scrotum ultrasound (USG) are normal, it’s a good indication that there isn’t a significant underlying medical problem contributing to your condition. However, PE can still be a frustrating and embarrassing issue to deal with.

Premature Ejaculation Treatment

There are several approaches to managing and treating PE:

  • Understanding PE: PE can stem from both psychological and physical factors. Psychological factors include stress, anxiety, or relationship issues, while physical factors can include a sensitive penis or other health conditions. Sometimes, it is a mix of both.
  • Behavioural Techniques: Techniques like the “stop-start” method and the “squeeze” technique can be highly effective. In the stop-start method, you or your partner stimulate your penis until you are close to ejaculation, then stop until the urge passes. This process can be repeated several times before allowing ejaculation. The squeeze technique involves gently squeezing the end of your penis (where the head meets the shaft) for about 30 seconds when you feel like you’re about to ejaculate, which can help to reduce the urge.
  • Medications: There are several medications that can help delay ejaculation. Topical anaesthetics like lidocaine or prilocaine can be applied to the penis to reduce sensation and help delay ejaculation. Oral medications, including certain antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been found effective. Another option can be the use of pain relievers like tramadol. However, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider before starting any medication to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for you.
  • Counselling and Therapy: Psychological factors play a significant role in PE. Seeing a sex therapist or counsellor can help address these issues. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for many men. Therapy can help you learn to manage anxiety and improve your sexual performance by developing coping strategies.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Adopting a healthier lifestyle can improve your overall sexual health and help manage PE. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and reducing alcohol consumption and smoking can make a significant difference. Stress reduction techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or meditation can also be beneficial.

Communication: Open and honest communication with your partner about your concerns can also be very helpful. Working together to find solutions can improve your relationship and reduce anxiety during sex, which can help manage PE.

Premature ejaculation is a common issue that can be managed with behavioural techniques, medications, lifestyle changes, and therapy. Open communication with your partner is also crucial.
